![]() When academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa sought to restrict its membership to students of the liberal arts in the late 19th century, Edward H. Specifically, the association was founded "to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges". It honors engineering students in American universities who have shown a history of academic achievement as well as a commitment to personal and professional integrity. The Tau Beta Pi Association (commonly Tau Beta Pi, ΤΒΠ, or TBP) is the oldest engineering honor society and the second oldest collegiate honor society in the United States. “Those are the situations that other transfer students just understand."ΣΤ" redirects here. “It’s like you’ll be walking to class, and you’ll be lost and ask someone for directions and they may be in a hurry and can’t stop and help, and little moments like that can be really difficult for transfer students,” Sorey said. For this reason, she encourages all transfer students to join the TSA in order to surround themselves with peers who understand the frustrations that may come with transferring schools. Sorey explained that though transfer students typically enter a new university as juniors and seniors, they are similar to freshmen in terms of campus knowledge. ![]() “Transferring from a smaller school to a big university was overwhelming at first, so to have other transfer students to talk to who I could connect with was really helpful and it eased that process for me,” Sorey said. Junior pre-physical therapy student and Miss Transfer Student Association Tiara Sorey said her participation in the organization helped her immensely as she adjusted to the size and pace of FAMU, something she said is often difficult for students transferring from junior colleges. Flowers with getting it up and running and bringing it to fruition, and you all are really the culmination of that, in terms of the national honor society, the transfer student association, and all of the other transfer student programs that are in place here at FAMU.” “We really saw a need in terms of transfer student services, when transfer students were coming in and just feeling that frustration and didn’t know where to turn,” Spencer said. Spencer went on to address the growing demand for transfer student services, as the University continues its mission to recruit the best and brightest students. “You all can look back on this and say ‘I was a part of that first group, and I made history here at FAMU,” she added. ![]() “I’m just so excited for you all to be a part of this,” Spencer said to the students. To qualify for membership in the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, transfer students must complete at least 30 credit hours and earn a minimum 3.5 GPA in their first semester.īrenda Spencer, Ph.D., director of the Academic Integration and Student Transitional Services Center, opened the program by congratulating the new inductees and commending them on their outstanding achievements as transfer students. Thanks to the efforts of Transfer Student Coordinator Crystal Flowers, FAMU is now in the 169th chapter of Tau Sigma National Honor Society. Tau Sigma National Honor Society, which was created on the campus of Auburn University in 1999, recognizes the academic excellence of transfer students. A total of 18 exceptional students were inducted into the newly installed Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), chapter of Tau Sigma National Honor Society on April 19.
